Are there free cloud phones?

Are there free cloud phones?

We checked the public pages of 5 services and none list a long-term free plan. Most offer a trial at most. To avoid a monthly fee long term, a spare phone or emulator is usually more realistic.

Is there a cloud phone that stays free?

We checked four cloud phones that Taiwanese players often use, plus our own, and none of their public pages list a long-term free plan. If you only want to try one, several offer a trial. If you want to idle long term without a monthly fee, a PC emulator or a spare phone is more realistic, as compared below.

Why are long-term free cloud phones rare?

A cloud phone is a machine that stays on, and the provider pays for the data centre, hardware and power. So the usual approach is a trial period followed by a paid plan.

Five things to test during a free trial

  1. Check the node: make sure it is close to you and currently available.
  2. Install your game: the first resource download usually takes longest, and you can check storage at the same time.
  3. Read the connection numbers: if the service shows latency or packet loss, note them and play for a few minutes. See cloud phone latency explained.
  4. Close the screen and come back: start the game's built-in auto feature, close the screen for a while, then reconnect to confirm your character is still running.
  5. Open it on another device: try a phone and a computer, and see whether extra software is needed.

A short trial may miss peak hours. If you mostly play on weekday evenings, run the trial then. If you decide to pay, start monthly, test a weekday evening and a weekend, then decide about a yearly plan.

What are the options without a monthly fee?

OptionMain costBest forDownside
Spare phoneJust power if you own one, about NT$10 a monthA spare phone and one accountMust stay plugged in and can only be used on that phone
PC emulatorSoftware is usually free, power about NT$180 to 250 a monthA computer that is on all day anywayStops when the computer shuts down, updates or sleeps
Your own phoneNo extra costOccasional idlingTies up your phone and uses more battery

Power costs are estimates: 5 W for a spare phone and 100 W for a computer, running all day. Your computer and rates will differ, and a graphics card or several instances use more. See cloud phone vs emulator vs old phone.

When is paying worth it?

Consider paying if any of these fit. The more that fit, the more it is worth it:

  • You want a game running all night or all day, but your computer is not on anyway.
  • You look after several accounts at once.
  • You mainly use an iPhone and want to play Android games.
  • You are often out and want to check from a phone or work computer.

If none fit, start with a spare phone or an emulator.

What should you watch for with free cloud phones?

You sign in to your game accounts on a cloud phone. If a service advertises permanently free use, check these first:

  • You can find the operating company and a privacy policy.
  • Do not sign in to your main account. Try an alt first.
  • Turn on two-step verification for game accounts.
  • When you are done, sign out, then clear or delete the device.

What should you do before a trial ends?

Providers handle data differently when a trial ends, so read the service's terms first. Do not treat a trial as your only copy of anything, and sign out of game accounts before it ends. If you plan to continue, check the plan price and data centre before paying.
